In poetry, when we scan a verse, we’re paying attention to the rhythm, the beats, and how the words flow. Sometimes, a pause or a break changes the whole meaning or brings attention to something you might not have noticed. In our sessions, the process can be similar. When I intervene or when there’s a sudden cut in what you’re saying, it’s not random—it’s like marking a beat or creating a pause. Following the session’s unconscious logic, instead of following a chronological time, may include making a cut that marks the session’s end. These scansions during or at the session’s end allow for something from the unconscious to come to the surface, a word or idea that might have been hidden beneath the rhythm of your usual speech. These breaks give space for something new to emerge, helping us to notice what’s unsaid or perhaps unsayable.
